A surge counter is a specialized monitoring device designed for metal-oxide surge arresters. Integrated directly into the arrester's grounding circuit, it accurately records the number of operating events—such as lightning strikes or overvoltage surges—that the arrester has responded to, providing clear visibility into its protective performance history.

Taking functionality a step further, a surge arrester monitor not only incorporates all the counting capabilities of a standard surge counter but also features a built-in leakage current meter. This dual-function design enables it to track both arrester operation times and real-time leakage current levels, offering comprehensive insights into the device’s insulation condition. By monitoring leakage current—an early indicator of potential degradation—it helps identify issues before they escalate, supporting proactive maintenance and ensuring the arrester remains reliable in critical power systems.
